  • Wonderful missionary biography. John Weaver understands that there is a difference between being a christian and being a follower of Jesus Christ.

  • You will fall in love with this humble man who was working inside Afghanistan when the twin towers fell. You will understand the people in Afghanistan in a better way and love them more too.

  • I would highly recommend this book (minus the last chapter) to missionaries. I appreciate the way the author shares his experience of living and working in a foreign country. He doesn't shy away from writing about his mistakes and to me, that makes the book a very good read. The last chapter could have been left out of the book. In my opinion it does not fit with the purpose of the book and because of the American rhetoric, I'm afraid the entire book will not be taken seriously by some.

  • John Weaver has an amazing story, and a truly unique perspective. As a humanitarian worker in Afghanistan during Taliban rule, he saw first hand the impact of their rule on the land. And he really truly loves the Afghan people. What struck me even more is his perspective on how God works things out, and his desire to maintain strong ties and relationships to the U.S. He grieved over September 11, 2001 as well, but knew his role was to remain in Afghanistan. Powerful story.

  • A beautiful book of a man giving his life to make a difference. We need more like John. This book also gives good insight into why sometimes it is necessary to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Elie Weisel wondered when the world would do something about what was happening in Germany. Read about the Afghan people from a man lives among them.

  • I loved this book so much more than Three Cups of Tea simply because this man was a believer. John's work in Afghanistan and the cooperation he received from all different kinds of non-profit org. happened because the Lord orchestrated it. I look forward to learning more about Shelter for Life and John Weaver's work in Afghanistan since the book was published in 2002.

  • I deeply appreciated sharing this journey into the lives and hearts of the Afghan people. We have much to learn through developing these relationships in our generation, and John's story inspires and challenges each of us to reach into the world around us and serve with whatever we have in our hands.

  • I have a deep respect for John Weaver. When all Americans were kicked out of Afghansitan, because fighting was at an all time high, John stayed and insisted on helping the Afghan refugees. Amazing story. Easy read.

  • A committed Christian called to serve the poor in northern Afghanistan, he was one of few who stayed after 9/11. I was struck by his determination and courage as well as his ability to work and serve with Afghan people.

  • I'm pretty sure the book is good in the end, but the way it is written is not very applying. no real tension But I would love to hear his story if he personally told it to me. :D
